For any cosmetic procedure you are desiring, you must make sure the surgeon you choose is a BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, not just a board certified surgeon or board certified cosmetic surgeon.  By being a board certified plastic surgeon this doctor has had at least 5 years of training and experience in surgery, with at least 2 years specifically in plastic surgery.  He must also be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and operate only in accredited medical facilities.    

The way our medical system is set up now, any medical doctor can legally perform a cosmetic procedure without having any specific training, meaning a neurologist can legally perform liposuction without ever having any formal training in surgical procedures.  For this reason, some unethical physicians will pass themselves off as “cosmetic surgeons” to make an extra buck.  Only surgeons who have gone through the rigorous training and testing necessary to be board certified in plastic surgery can call themselves “plastic surgeons”.

Sub-muscular Breast Implant PlacementThe possible benefits of this placement are that it may result in less palpable implants, less capsular contracture, a more natural look, and easier imaging of the breast with mammography.The sub-muscular placement may make surgery last longer, may make recovery longer, and may make it more difficult to have some re-operation procedures than the sub-glandular placement.

This placement also may make it easier to see and feel your implants through your skin after your surgery. Breast Augmentation Incision Sites: Transaxillary vs. Inframammory

The terminology itself can be confusing and daunting.  Who uses this kind of language besides medical staff?  In this post you can find the information you need to make an informed decision using layman terms.

 Transaxillary Incision (Armpit Incision):

This incision is beneficial because it is discreetly hidden in the underarm of the patient.  The incision is usually about 1-2 inches long.  The surgeon uses very small instruments through this opening to make a pocket under the muscle located at the breast.  He will also use this site to insert a saline implant and fill it to the desired size.  This incision is typically used with saline implants, but if you choose 300 cc or smaller silicone implant, it is possible for the surgeon to use this type of incision.  This incision site reports less difficulty with breast-feeding after the procedure.

Inframammary Incision (Breast Fold Incision):

This incision site is also discreetly hidden under the breast in the breast fold.  This incision will be slightly larger and is often used with larger pre-filled implants such as silicone 300 cc and larger.  From this incision, the surgeon can easily make a pocket for the implant under the muscle creating a natural look.  With this incision, you can expect less complications with breast-feeding as well.

Neither incision site is more beneficial.  The choice will be made by you and your surgeon based on your preference of implant and your expectations of results.
